Eckel on Arnold on Java generics

Arnold thinks generics were a mistake, Eckel mildly disagrees.

Comments:
Arnold says, "But we have a demonstration proof that we can live without [generics], namely that we have for nearly a decade." Does this mean we can live without any technological advance beyond fire and the wheel?
